· To charge the iPod, simply use the cord to plug it into the USB port on your computer.  If you don’t have a computer you’ll need a USB Wall outlet adapter which you can find at  www.apple.com and search for USB Power Adapter.  There is also a great tutorial on your iPod at www.apple.com.

Working with iTunes:

iTunes is a wonderful way to organize and manage your music.  You can download it at

www.iTunes.com.  After you have downloaded iTunes, plug in your iPod to your computer using

the supplied USB cable.  After a moment, iTunes will recognize your iPod.  It will ask you to

register the iPod.  You can if you want but it is not mandatory to do so.  Two IMPORTANT things

for you to know before you go any farther:

· DO NOT CLICK ON THE RESTORE BUTTON. Restoring your iPod will wipe it clean and you will lose all of your pre-loaded content.

· DO NOT TRY TO SYNC YOUR MUSIC IN ANY WAY TO YOUR IPOD.  Your iPod is set to manual mode which allows you manually add music to your iPod by dragging and dropping it from your iTunes library to your iPod.  If you try to SYNC your music, it will wipe all of your pre-loaded content off the iPod.

 Adding new music:

Adding new music to your iPod is easy.  Download the iTunes software from www.itunes.com.  You can purchase music through iTunes, or simply transfer your CD collection to your iPod using iTunes.  To transfer CDs, simply insert a CD into the CD/DVD drive of your computer. iTunes will ask you if you want to transfer the music.  Click “yes”.  The CD will live in the “Music” file on iTunes which is on the top left of the screen (under “Library”).  You should see the cover art for the CD on the main screen (or “unknown” if iTunes couldn’t find the CD).  Simply click once on the cover art and drag it into your iPod which is located under “Devices” in the middle left of the iTunes screen.

To transfer music from your pre-loaded iPod to iTunes:

Your iPod is set to “manual” mode which allows you to drag and drop music into your iPod from ANY computer.  But it doesn’t allow for you to automatically transfer the pre-loaded music from your iPod to your iTunes library. To do that you need a software program.  There are many out there but we recommend Media Widget from Bootstrap Development for PC or iRip from the Little App Factory for Mac.  Both are about $25.  The software will pull all the music from your iPod and put it on your iTunes.

To change your iPod from “Manual” mode to “Sync” mode:
Follow the above directions for transferring the music from your iPod to your iTunes library.

You will then need to restore your iPod to factory settings (which will wipe the iPod clean), but before doing that you will want to do some music management in iTunes.  All content in your iTunes library automatically has a check mark next to it.  This means that when your iPod syncs to your library, anything that is check will be put on your iPod.  But you may not want certain things on your iPod. UNCHECK anything you do not want on your iPod.

Then, plug in your iPod and restore it (look for “restore” button on the main iPod page of iTunes when your iPod is plugged in to your computer).  After you restore it, it will automatically have the "synchronize my music to my iPod" button checked (on the page that asks you to name the iPod. Keep that checked.  Your iPod will then synchronize to your iTunes library on your computer.

By checking and unchecking items in iTunes, you will be able to manage the content on your iPod every time you plug it in.
